“One Step Closer”

“One Step Closer”

Peer Education Project

Why?
Working on their own experiences of transition from Primary to Secondary school, members of the S1 Media Group decided to do something to help reassure other pupils with concerns they might have.

Pupils say, “P7s need reassurance about moving up to secondary, stop them worrying or being anxious about bullying, getting lost and new classes.”

What?
Pupils:
• “We liked the idea of doing this on film and we came up with a theme.
• “Everybody was involved in writing the script”
• “We played games which helped get into out acting role and we learnt how to act”
• “We learnt film camera skills”

How do we know it was successful?
The film has now been shown to eight primary schools in Dundee. Pupils from these 8 schools commented on the video; “I thought the video was helpful and it made me feel better about moving up to Secondary”, “I’ve learnt that you don’t get bullies that much and that if you get lost or bullied then you can ask for help”

Factfile
The Peer Education Project in Dundee supports young people to be peer educators and work with other young people around keeping well and avoiding drugs and alcohol. The peer educators also take part in local activities to promote social inclusion, improve young people's health, wellbeing and increase participation.
