Learning Zone: Rosehall High School

Why?
Rosehall High School developed the Learning Zone with the aim of providing a prevention focused alternative to exclusion. It is a support base for pupils who have been absent for prolonged periods, have erratic attendance or experience difficulty in individual subjects. The Learning Zone is used as a transition period to give pupils the confidence and skills to return to classes and resume a normal curriculum.

What?
A major focus of the programme is to shift attitudes away from ‘blame culture’ to one that is nurturing and supportive while providing pupils with meaningful challenges and targets. It provides a more proactive model for crisis management and a flexible, informal environment in which to respond to the needs of individual pupils.

The Learning Zone provides learning and teaching in the following ways:

• Giving helpful behaviour management strategies
• Small group or individual teaching
• Relevant, challenging and motivating tasks and learning activities to promote confidence, self esteem and achievement
• Using a range of resources, including Information and Communication Technology, to motivate and engage reluctant learners

Why was it successful?
A number of benefits have been observed as a result of the Learning Zone. The school reports improved attendance and attainment and a drop in exclusion.
